East to Norwich
20 July
It was my sincerest hope, this morning, to get back onto the intended schedule of trains, and it was largely successful.
Just crossed the River Trent at Althorpe. No photos, I must be slowing down.
There are no lifts here but an exceedingly long 4-way ramp which must be about 100m long in total and contain more steel than four lifts! It must surely take the average person nearly 5 minutes to cross the tracks using the ramps on each side.
Just learnt that my train to Ely is cancelled but there's another 1hr later
A young man with a baby seat and baby clothes sat on the seat to the left then told me all about his 2-week old daughter, born 2 months early, who's nearly doubled her birth weight to 1.7kg (under 4lb). Most of the carriage wished them well.
I thought Anglia was flat. What I didn't expect was the great climb up the hill to the inn. It seemed to go on for ever. Also my replacement suitcase from TKMax is very noisy indeed over rough surfaces.
Having reached the inn, I received new news that, because of the heat, kitchen staff had been sent home so no food tonight. Why no salads? Much better in the hot weather. I had to make do with a bag of peanuts and a packet of crisps washed down with a pint, well two actually.
